What affects the price
- Country and type of unit: private clinics generally charge more than state or public units, and prices vary widely between countries.
- Number of sessions: most people need three sessions a week, so a two-week trip usually means six sessions.
- Extras: some units charge separately for medication given during treatment (such as EPO or iron), blood tests, or a first-visit assessment.
- Season: popular holiday areas get busy in summer and around holidays, and you may have less choice of unit and session times.
Will anyone pay for it?
It depends on where you're insured and where you're going. Some reciprocal healthcare schemes cover dialysis at public units in other countries, provided it's booked in advance. For example, the UK's GHIC can cover pre-arranged dialysis at state units in the EU. Many national health systems and insurers don't cover routine treatment abroad, though, so you may have to pay yourself and claim back afterwards, or not at all. Ask your home unit and your health insurer before you travel, and get the answer in writing.
